Just 10 minutes for amazing dip.
Our kids eat their fair share of hummus on a regular basis. Either with rice crackers or carrot sticks, this is one of their favourite afternoon snacks after school. Their love for it started in preschool where the educators often gave it to the kids as a nutritious snack while the kids wait for parents to collect them.
Forget about the kids. Hummus is also enjoyed by the young at heart. I will often serve this when friends pop around for a drink or two, at a party or when the desire grabs me. Honestly, it’s so easy to make. Just a few ingredients and 10 minutes can result in a far superior dip to what you’d buy in the supermarkets.
Yes, you can buy ready-made hummus but seriously why not make it at home from scratch. The primary ingredient is chickpeas. You can buy this from your local supermarket in the canned bean section and is inexpensive. I often keep a couple of tins in the pantry for when the kids demand some fresh hummus as a snack. Did I mention that it’s super quick and easy to make so can whip this up for them in no time?!
If you’ve been living in a cave and don’t know what hummus is, let me tell you. Hummus is a dip popular in the Middle East and the Mediterranean. Made from chickpeas, garlic, lemon juice and tahini paste. It’s delicious and often served as a dip with pita bread or included in a wrap with salad and grilled meats. Today, it is commercially available in supermarkets throughout Australia and New Zealand in numerous traditional and non-traditional varieties, with or without different toppings.
Hummus or Hummous?
The name for this delectable dip is often inconsistent. I’ve seen it spelt in a few different ways. After a little research, I found it’s commonly spelt as hummus. However it is also spelt as houmous or hoummos in Britain. I reckon take your pick on which spelling you prefer and stick with it. Personally I’ve always gone with hummus. Yes, the different spelling can be confusing. What I can guarantee is it’s referencing the same popular dip loved by so many.
