Blueberry Bliss Balls

Very berry blue.

Blueberries are honestly my youngest daughter’s favourite fruit with strawberries a close second. She has often eaten two punnets (250g) of blueberries in one sitting. The way she eats them leaves you thinking she barely takes a breath between eating each berry. I know that most kids seem to love these little berries but my daughter is simply mad about them. I would buy her all the punnets of blueberries her heart desires… if it wasn’t for the cost.

Our favourite place to buy blueberries in bulk is from Sydney Markets. There are two sellers we visit each time there to see if they have them available. While we have often scored amazing deals from them, they aren’t always in season. There are times the cost for one punnet can soar to around $6 each in the supermarkets. While I love my daughter to bits, there is no way I’d spend that amount on a tiny container full of berries!

That’s when I decided to supplement fresh blueberries with dried ones. They are just as delicious and my daughter still loves them. I’ve managed to buy a bag of them cheap enough at Costco otherwise Aldi is my go-to place dried blueberries.

Today I decided to use them to make blueberry bliss balls. Tiny round morsels of healthy delicious goodness, simply perfect for school lunches and afternoon snacks. Containing also dates, coconut, oats and chia seeds – perfect for growing little bodies to fuel them up with the right energy to tackle the day. These blueberry bliss balls are super easy to make, all you need is a small processor to whizz all the ingredients up together. The best thing is that they will happily store in either the fridge or freezer for when needed.

These Blueberry Bliss Balls contain dried blueberries, not jam or fresh ones. Makes these healthier and will last longer when stored.

This blueberry bliss ball recipe is one I invented myself as the ones I found online used either blueberry jam or fresh blueberries. Don’t know about you but the idea of making bliss balls with sugar packed jam totally negates the health aspect of them. Plus with fresh berries they won’t last long if you plan to keep them in the fridge. That’s why dried blueberries are perfect – no added sugar and will keep well once made.

  • 1 cup blueberries
  • 8 madjool dates
  • 1/2 cup rolled oats
  • 1/2 cup dessicated coconut
  • 2 teaspoons chia seeds
  • 1-2 tablespoons water

Instructions

  • Add all ingredients into a small processor. Blend until all ingredients break down and start to combine together.
  • Take tablespoonfuls and roll into tight balls.
  • Roll into extra coconut or leave as is.
  • Store in an airtight container in either the fridge or freezer.

Notes

  • Add one tablespoon of water to begin with to help combine the ingredients together. If not combining, add a further tablespoon.
  • You can add more dates if you wish. By adding in 10 extra dates, you mayfind you will need only one tablespoon of water to combine, not two.
