Happiness is a slice of pizza.
Being a family with Italian origins from Daniel’s side, we do eat our fair share of pizza. That’s when living right in the heart of the Italian precinct here in the Sydney’s Inner West has been wonderful. But eating out is expensive, even for a sneaky pizza meal.
Making your own pizza and pizza dough at home is fun. I’ve always made homemade pizzas, even when living in New Zealand. Back in the day I used pita bread as the pizza base as a quick hack but now I make my own bases. Choosing what tasty toppings to add on top is where you can get really creative. I’ve done lots of different combinations and we do have our family favourites. Just have to be mindful that the kids don’t like spicy foods but we normally compensate with one spicy pizza for us, one that the kids can eat.
I’ve mentioned before that we have a breadmaker. When Daniel first mentioned to me that he wanted to buy one, I never thought we’d get much use out of it. This is so far from the truth. Having fresh homemade bread to eat with homemade soup is out of this world. But what a lot of people don’t know if you can use your breadmaker to do other things like make pizza dough and a batch of jam.
While this recipe uses a breadmaker, the ingredients are the same if you knead them together by hand It’s just a little more time consuming not to mention a little arm strength to do so. And if you make by hand, you need somewhere warm for the dough to rise. Often the kitchen is the best place, or somewhere sunny.

Pizza Dough
Ingredients
- 200 ml water, luke warm
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 2.5 cups flour
- 1 3/4 teaspoons yeast
Instructions
- Put all ingredients into the breadmaker.
- If making by hand, mix together then knead for about 10 minutes until the dough is elastic in feel. Put into a bowl and cover with a tea towel to rise to about double in size. Then
- Roll dough on a lightly floured surface into a 30cm round for a thick base, or 2 x 30cm rounds for a thin base.
- Place onto a lightly greated baking tray or pizza trays. Spread or spinkle pizza with selected toppings.
- Bake in a preheated oven at 210 degrees celsius for 10-12 minutes, or until base is cooked and toppings are heated through.
Notes
- Instead of rolling the dough on a floured surface, use semolina instead. It gives the pizza base a nice finish once baked.
- Mix together tomato paste with crushed garlic and dried oregano for a quick and easy pizza sauce to put straight onto the base.
- For something a little different, try this... once the pizza is out of the oven, add fresh rocket on top and sprinkle with both a fragrant olive oil and balsamic vinegar.
